Remove the smell in your boat – ozone treatment that reaches into the cushions
A musty smell, mould and damp in the cabin are a boat's most common problem after winter storage. A 60–120 minute ozone treatment breaks down the odour molecules in cushions, wood and fabrics – rather than masking them. Treat in above-freezing temperatures and air out well afterwards.
Sound familiar?
- A stale, musty smell the moment you open the cabin
- Mould odour in cushions, mattresses and curtains
- Damp smell from the galley and bilge
How to do it
- Clear out and dry: Take out loose fabrics, dry up any damp and remove visible mould by hand – ozone removes the smell, not the growth itself.
- Run the treatment: Close up the cabin, place the unit centrally and run it for 60–120 minutes at a minimum of +15 °C. No one on board.
- Air out and repeat if needed: Air out for at least 30 minutes. If the smell is deep-seated, run a second treatment – and always track down the source of the damp.

Frequently asked questions
Does ozone work on mould smell in boat cushions?
Yes. Ozone penetrates the padding and breaks down the odour molecules. Remove any visible mould first and dry the cushions.
Can I treat the boat during winter storage?
You can, but it is weaker in the cold. Ozone works best at +15–20 °C – ideally in spring.
How often should I treat it?
For most owners, one treatment at launch and one when hauling out is enough.
