Ozone Generator vs. Air Purifier – The Difference
Ozongenerator.Nu – Editorial team · Updated 2026-06-22
Ozone generators and air purifiers are often confused, but they do different jobs. An ozone generator eliminates stubborn odours by breaking the molecules down – in an empty room, for a limited time. An air purifier continuously filters particles (dust, pollen) out of the air while people are present.
Ozone generator: odour elimination
Strength: breaks down deep-seated odours (smoke, pets, mould, damp) in the air, in textiles and in furniture. Use: in an empty, closed room, then air out. It's a one-off treatment, not something you run all day.
Air purifier: air filtration
Strength: continuously filters particles such as dust, pollen and smoke particles in an occupied room. It does not, however, permanently remove the odour molecules buried deep in textiles.
Which do you need?
To eliminate an existing, stubborn odour: an ozone generator. For ongoing air quality with allergies or fine dust: an air purifier. Many people use both – ozone first to clear the smell, then an air purifier for everyday air.
Frequently asked questions
Can an air purifier remove smoke smell?
It filters smoke particles out of the air, but it doesn't permanently remove the odour molecules sitting in upholstery and textiles. An ozone generator is better suited to that.
Can I leave the ozone generator running all the time?
No. An ozone generator is only used for a limited time in an empty room, never continuously while people are present.
Which is more environmentally friendly?
Ozone leaves no residue and breaks down into oxygen; an air purifier needs regular new filters. Both have their place.
